ryNTH [09]

RyNTH is an ongoing piece involving the sonification of the Superformula. The resultant shape, whose structure is informed in real-time by sound input also has a sound reactive texture. Generally the deformation are informed by amplitude and the textures by spectral analysis of input audio frequencies. Recent outputs of ryNTH were made for Artware5. Three composite prints visualise the following audio descriptions, ‘Harmony & Dissonance’, ‘Concurrent Frequencies’ and ‘Harmonic Concordance’. More pictures of works I contributed to Artware 5, in 2009, can be found here. RyNTH was originally made for, and performed at, the Decibelio Music Festival, Madrid, June 2006.

The Superformula is a generic geometric transformation equation that encompasses a wide range forms found in nature, the transformation applied to a circle, for example, produces the archetypal shapes of starfish, shells and flowers. The equation was formulated by Johan Gielis. My interest is in using the formula to create more abstract geometric constructions.
