Hydro Acoustic Study, Smart Space Project [with Francisco Lopez]
In early June I gave a collaborative performance with sound artist Francisco Lopez for a SPSound [Spatial Sound] event at the Smart Project Space in Amsterdam. The night was hosted in association with the Ambifonica group and Optofonica Lab (a collective involved in producing/curating synthaesthetic art forms & experiments in sound spatialization).
I met Francisco while performing at Sonic Acts 2010 and we both expressed interest in a serious collaboration. Francisco, having seen examples of my structured geometric works, asked for something ‘more organic’ to work alongside a new dense sonic piece he was working on.

The main concepts behind the piece was that of hydroacoustic activity – suggesting affect of sound waves propagating through liquids to create Cymatic patterns. I used a number of different shaders in VVVV to generate liquids, plasmas, and other kinds of dynamic fluid forms. Other inspirations came from microscopic and cellular lifeforms, axon activity in the brain and sonically transduced plasmas. Different layers of material within the patch responded to different frequency bands. Each layer could be accessed in improvisatory manner according to the insinuations made by Francisco’s composition in real-time.
